
Prof. Mariusz Szymanowski passed away
Prof. dr hab. Mariusz Szymanowski, geographer, Director of the Institute of Geography and Regional Development of the University of Wrocław, passed away. He was 59 years old. The funeral will take place at Grabiszyński Cemetery on 18 April (Thursday) at 13:00.
Prof. Mariusz Szymanowski was a geography graduate of the University of Wrocław, graduating in 1989. After graduation he worked in technical positions at the Institute of Geography of the UWr. In 2003 he obtained a doctoral degree in geography. From 2004 he started working as an assistant and later as an assistant professor in the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography of the Institute of Geography and Regional Development. In 2014, he obtained a postdoctoral degree in Earth sciences in the discipline of geography. From 2016, he was employed as an associate professor, and on 11 December 2023. The President of the Republic of Poland awarded him the title of professor of science in the discipline of Earth and Environmental Sciences. Between 2016 and 2020, he was a senator of the UWr. He was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit. Since 2016, prof. Mariusz Szymanowski served as Director of the Institute of Geography and Regional Development.
He has authored and co-authored more than 100 scientific and popular science publications and has been a manager and contractor in numerous scientific projects.
