„Johann Jacob Eybelwieser młodszy. Wrocławski malarz doby baroku” on sale from August!

The latest book by dr Marek Kwaśny from the UWr Institute of Art History, whose interests focus on Silesian and European modern art, is already in production at the printers. Of particular interest to Kwaśny is the life of 17th and 18th century painters in a socio-economic context, as well as issues relating to modern Catholic patronage.

The University of Wrocław Press is waiting for copies of the eagerly awaited book presenting one of Wrocław’s most prolific Baroque painters! The study is the result of research into the life and work of Johann Jacob Eybelwieser the Younger (1667-1744), a guild painter of the Baroque era working in Wrocław and Silesia. Although the artist is not completely unknown, his creative profile has so far not been the subject of a monographic study. Eybelwieser’s modestly recognised oeuvre and the scarcely preserved archival sources have not encouraged research in this direction. Thus, the painter’s name appeared mainly in synthetic studies of Silesian Baroque art. The fundamental premise of the work was therefore to collect, analyse and verify all the information about the artist and his works, consisting in particular in a thorough examination of the master’s paintings – taking into account both their technological and iconographic aspects, as well as the history and circumstances of their creation – and the very subject of the activities of his workshop.

The book is divided into two parts. The first contains four chapters describing the life, career strategies, workshop and commercial context of the master’s oeuvre, while the second contains a catalogue of the artist’s works covering 230 works by the painter created from the start of his independent artistic career in 1699 until his death in 1744. It is also an in-depth look at the master’s oeuvre – taking into account technological and iconographic aspects, the history and circumstances of the creation of the works to indicate their place in the artist’s overall oeuvre.
