Flood risk in Wrocław
The situation on the Odra River is very dynamic. In view of the threat, the Rector of the University of Wrocław set up a crisis team on 16 September 2024, which monitors the situation on an ongoing basis and liaises with the Crisis Management Centres of public administration bodies.
As of 17 September, all events at the Lower Silesian Science Festival have been cancelled.
Employees affected by flooding or waterlogging who need housing support are asked to contact the head of their unit.
What is particularly important now:
- checking the closure and tightness of windows below ground level (any cellar windows, etc.), possibly securing them against water ingress,
- securing the thresholds of entrance doors where water can enter the building in the event of rainfall, including the entrance to cellars and heating centres,
- checking the closing of all windows in the building, in particular skylights and basement windows, that they are completely closed (tight, no micro-drops),
- checking at basement level that there are no electrical appliances connected by extension cords, if there are extension cord sockets the appliances should not be lying on the ground, they should be placed high, on a device, shelf or suspended from the ceiling. If the appliance does not need to operate (it is in stanby) it should be disconnected from the mains and the plug and socket should be placed above the floor,
- checking that smoke extraction devices, in particular smoke dampers and ventilation dampers, are fully closed,
- check that fire access routes to buildings are unobstructed, remove any obstructions that would prevent fire engines from accessing the building to pump out water,
- identify critical equipment that, if disconnected due to a power failure, could cause serious damage and require security guards to inspect them when making rounds in the building
- secure manhole covers and any other searches in the floors of rooms below ground level.
Take care of yourselves!
