UWr Language Advice Centre

We now have the new duty schedule for the UWr Language Advice Centre!

The Language Advice Centre has enjoyed great interest and popularity for many years among lovers and users of the Polish language. It was established on 1 February 1973 at the initiative of staff members of the Department of Polish Language: doc. Bogdan Siciński, dr Franciszek Nieckula and mgr Jan Miodek.

In the first decade, the service received around 800 enquiries per year, and in the 1990s the number was even higher.

On several occasions, for reasons beyond the founders’ control, the service was temporarily suspended. A significant breakthrough came with the introduction of the possibility to ask questions electronically – first via a dedicated form on the website of the Institute of Polish Studies, and later by email.

The questions posed by those who call in, keen to use correct Polish, most often concern spelling rules, the etymology and meaning of words, and correct stress patterns. The service also issues opinions on important language-related matters (such as street naming).

At present, the telephone line is open for three hours a week.
