Generative Artificial Intelligence in Language Education – Workshops

Working party “AI and Languages Learning and Teaching” in Arqus Alliance has started organising workshops and webinars about the practical usage of tools of AI in the process of language learning.

On Wednesday, 29th of April at 10 a.m. the next meeting related to the topic will be held.

The workshop “Generative AI in Language Education: Tools and Strategies for Skill-Oriented Task Design in L1 and L2 Contexts” will take place online and will be held by: dr Diana Šileikaitė-Kaishauri and dr Virginija Masiulionytė (Vilnius University). LINK

Theme of the workshop:

The aim of the workshop is to analyse the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Language Education, including the diversion of learning native language (L1) and foreign language (L2). The workshop focuses on the process of how the Generative AI tools can support creating and developing key language skills exercises and tasks – understanding (especially listening comprehension), oral and written expression, meditation and written interaction. In the field of native language teaching, the workshop addresses applications such as text simplification and differentiation, guided brainstorming and genre transformation and automatic structure, coherence and register feedback. In the field of foreign language teaching, main attention is paid to adapting texts according to the CEFR, dialogue generation, interactive role-playing through AI-based conversational agents, feedback on students’ writing and intercultural scenario projects. The workshop also provides an overview of tools that are suitable for educational purposes, including several categories, such as: large language models (ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Perplexity, Copilot), audio-generating tools (ElevenLabs, Luvvoice, openly available text-to-speech solutions), image generators (Microsoft Bing Image Creator, Leonardo AI) and video production tools (InVideo, video generating NotebookLM, PDF-to-Video).

The main goal is to show how Generative AI can improve task design while remaining consistent with competence- oriented language teaching and learning.
