University of Wrocław promoted in CWUR ranking

The University of Wrocław has moved up in this year’s international CWUR ranking. It is a promotion by only one place, from the 833rd to the 832nd position, however taking into account the fact that in the ranking about 20 thousand universities and scientific institutions from all over the world are evaluated, and the ranking list includes 2000 best of them, we consider it a success. Especially that the methodology of the ranking does not take into account the specificity of Polish higher education system.

As far as Polish universities are concerned, we came 4th. In front of us were Jagiellonian University, Warsaw University and Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań. We took the first place in the region ahead of all other higher education institutions in Wrocław.

In the TOP 2000 group there are 40 Polish universities and research institutions.

The ranking is published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), a consulting institution based in the United Arab Emirates. CWUR provides strategic advice to universities and governments to improve the quality of higher education and research.

The CWUR ranking, published since 2012, does not rely on information provided by universities or surveys. Data for the ranking is collected from various databases and publicly available sources. CWUR compares universities and research institutes in four categories:

  1. Quality of education (25%)
  2. Employability of graduates (25%)
  3. Faculty (10%)
  4. Research (40% ).

In the category with the highest weighting, namely research, not only quantity but also quality matters. The total number of scientific publications of a given institution is taken into account here, as well as publications in top-tier journals, articles in highly-influential journals and citations.

The quality of education is assessed by the number of graduates of a university who have won prestigious academic awards, taking into account the size of the university. Employability of graduates is measured by the number of those graduates who have held top positions in the world’s largest companies, relative to the university’s size. These companies are those on the Forbes Global 2000 list.

The quality of academic staff is assessed by the ranking institution through the number of employees who have won prestigious academic awards (international prizes, medals, etc.).

It is worth noting that as many as three out of four ranking categories (education, employability of graduates, faculty) are evaluated using quite specific indicators, adjusted mainly to the American or British system of higher education, which makes it difficult for Polish universities to compete here. All the more we are pleased with the stable position of the University of Wrocław in CRWU.
