University of the Third Age<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The University of the Third Age, which operates at the University of Wroc\u0142aw, is the second university of its kind in Poland after the Uniwersity of Warsaw and one of the first in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was established in 1976 (the University of the Third Age in France had been founded just three years earlier). For the first three years, still as the School of the Third Age, it had its seat on Mazowiecka Street. Its organiser and academic supervisor at the time was Czes\u0142aw Kempisty, and its head was Karol W\u0119gier. At the end of the 1970s, the headquarters were moved to Stawowa Street, to the Medical Vocational College, and under its new director, Alina Woznicka, the School gained the status of a University. Another breakthrough came in 1997, when the UTW, under the supervision of dr Walentyna Wnuk, became permanently affiliated with the Institute of Pedagogy of the UWr at Dawida Street (two years later it was incorporated into the structure of the University of Wroc\u0142aw). By then, the number of students had more than doubled compared to the 1970s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Today it is one of the most important centres for the education and activation of seniors. The classes held there enable older students to supplement and update their knowledge, taking particular account of their needs (a large part of the multidisciplinary lectures are medical issues, but the range of subjects is very wide and includes such issues as philosophy, physics, religious studies, art, psychology or classical philology). Seminars develop knowledge in andragogy, sociology and research methodology, while workshops train in journalism, memory training, painting, acting or computer skills. UTW students can also learn foreign languages and develop their interests in over a dozen sections.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
