Preludium grant for a UWr mathematician<\/h1>\n\n\n

Jakub Gogolok of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science has received the Preludium grant from the National Science Centre for his research project entitled \u201cFree and iterative operators in fields\u201d (\u201eWolne i iteratywne operatory na cia\u0142ach\u201d). He will receive funding of PLN 68,320. Congratulations!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jakub is a doctoral student at the Institute of Mathematics of the University of Wroc\u0142aw. His research is carried out under the supervision of prof. Piotr Kowalski.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 My research focuses on free and iterative operators in fields \u2013 says, explaining: \u2013 A field is a kind of an algebraic structure. Similar to sets of rational numbers and real numbers, or a set of all rational functions. An operator represents the morph of a field, fulfilling specified dependencies. Those objects constantly appear in mathematics. They feature in various significant issues, for example in dynamics of algebraic varieties (field automorphisms are important here), or in Diophantine number\/geometry theory (differential fields are important here). It leads to their indirect involvement in more tangible areas of mathematics, such as cryptography. As part of my project, I intend to research algebraic, geometric, and above all model theory properties of a general class of field operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 Model theory is a subarea of logic, which focuses on \u201cdefinable\u201d (in the sense of first-order logic) aspects of mathematical structures. It provides us with a set of powerful tools which help us comprehend various mathematical objects \u2013 the researcher says. \u2013 Such deep understanding is key for applications in other areas of mathematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His interest in model theory is a result of prof. Ludomir Newelski\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2013 He made me discover the deep and unifying look on mathematics given by model theory. He is the reason why I chose the University of Wroc\u0142aw for my PhD. Also, it is worth to mention prof. Piotr Kowalski who showed me how effectively those ideas connect with algebra and algebraic geometry \u2013 he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
