Philosophy of and in Science

Classical philosophy of science in the 20th century was descriptive, dealing with the main topics of science – the structure of theories and explanations, variations in methods of hypothesis testing, development of scientific theories, the progress of science – from a distance, or from an armchair. Contemporary philosophers focus on the practice of science – in concrete scientific disciplines, for specific scientific models, in real laboratory conditions, under social influences – from the perspective of the scientists themselves. This talk aims to describe the reasons for this transition and the main goals of philosophy in science. The lecture will also discuss the relation between philosophy in science and several other reflections of science – the science and technology studies, the social studies of science, the social epistemology and the meta-science.

Dr Lukáš Zámečník is a philosopher from the Department of General Linguistics at Palacký University in Olomouc. He is interested in the analytic philosophy of science, especially the topics of explanation in science and humanities. He is the author of several books, especially Nástin filozofie vědy (Brno: Host 2015), and The Future of Philosophy (Olomouc: VUP 2014).
