80 trees for 80 years

– With the planting of the first of eighty trees, we are beginning a series of initiatives that not only symbolise our history and tradition, but also our responsibility towards the future – said the Rector of the University of Wrocław, prof. Robert Olkiewicz, as he planted the first tree, thus launching the cycle of planting eighty trees to mark today’s anniversary of the University’s 80th year, celebrated on 1 October.

The first tree – a maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba) – will grow beside the University’s main building, near the staff car park. The ginkgo is a species of exceptional symbolism, regarded as a sign of longevity, resilience, and harmony. Its presence is intended to serve as a reminder of the enduring nature of the academic tradition and of our responsibility towards future generations.

– This species is a symbol of longevity, perseverance, and contemplation – emphasised the Director of the Botanical Garden, prof. Zygmunt Kącki. – It reflects the continuity of our University and will serve as a beautiful reminder of its lasting character.

Today marks the inauguration of the 2025/2026 academic year, during which the University of Wrocław celebrates the 80th anniversary of its re-establishment as a Polish university. The planting of 80 trees is just one of many academic, cultural, and sporting events commemorating the jubilee. – We want these trees to grow together with future generations of students and the citizens of Wrocław – stressed Rector Olkiewicz.

Further plantings of these “university trees” are planned at various University sites as well as across the city of Wrocław, until the jubilee number of 80 is reached.
