Lower Silesian Science Festival (DFN)

The Lower Silesian Science Festival is an annual popular science event held in September, organised by Wrocław higher schools, Polish Academy of Sciences institutes, and groups outside academia.

During lectures, workshops, and laboratory classes researchers try to present the achievements of science in layman’s terms.

Each year in October, besides the main events in Wrocław, the Festival travels to Legnica, Zgorzelec, Dzierżoniów, Głogów, Jelenia Góra, Wałbrzych, Ząbkowice Śląskie, and Bystrzyca Kłodzka.

Prof. Grażyna Antczak from the University of Wrocław is the general coordinator of DFN. He has been working on the Festival since its beginnings, and is both heart and soul of the entire event. Prof. Adam Pawłowski from the Institute of Library and Information Science is the University coordinator of the Festival. Lectures, workshops, shows, and laboratory classes take place on the premises of  all UWr faculties, in Confucius Institute, the Foreign Language Centre, and the University of the Third Age.

The faculties of life sciences usually prepare the majority of events which attract biggest crowds. Especially popular are laboratory and practical classes at the Faculty of Biological Sciences. In Electron Microscopy in Biology and Medicine class participants had the chance to observe peculiarly enlarged cell structures and other objects. Events concerning the use of living organisms to assess environmental condition also aroused great interest.

The extensive programme prepared by the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy drew nearly four thousand guests from all age groups. The physics circus and show enjoyed particular popularity.

Open-air events Stone Pictures, Do It Yourself Trilobite, Pan Your Own Gold, and Earth in Motion: How Mountains and Trenches Are Formed show organised by the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management drew much attention.

Over three and a half thousand guests visited the Faculty of Chemistry where school students were able to make their own experiments.

The mathematical marathon organised by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science attracted many visitors. During meetings How Much Mathematics There Is In Language. and Natural and Formal Language Systems lecturers presented mathematical methods for descripting language and communication.

Guests of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law, Administration and Economics as well as the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences enjoyed rich programme devoted to economics, history, and general sociology

Many events were devoted to the humanities. Guests took part in festival meetings organised by the Faculty of Letters, Foreign Language Centre, University Library, and Confucius Institute, where the workshop on constructing Chinese lanterns and cutouts was an absolute hit.

DFN success is the effect of co-operation between many individuals – DFN Office staff, lecturers, and faculty coordinators. They advertise the Festival at their respective faculties, encourage academic staff to organise lectures, shows, exhibitions, and workshops, and they supervise Festival events.
