
Two UWr projects nominated in the Lower Silesian Griffin contest
Two UWr projects were nominated in the category of the Best Cooperation Between Business and Science, at the Lower Silesian Griffin – Economic Award contest, organised by Western Chamber of Commerce. The projects were titled the Certificate of Plain Polish, and the Active Luminescent Layers for Photonics – cooperation between Łukasiewicz – PORT and University of Wrocław as part of the Industrial Doctoral Program.
The Plain Polish Studio is a research unit of UWr that has been developing the Polish version of the plain language standard since 2012 (current standard: ISO/DIS 24495-1). The method of text simplification developed in Wrocław is called Plain Polish. So far, it has been used by numerous government offices (such as Social Insurance Institution and National Tax Administration) and companies (bank Pekao for example). The Studio has also developed a special certificate that recognises those companies who try to simplify their communication on their own. This certificate, titled the Certificate of Plain Polish, is what we wanted to bring people’s attention to. The Studio’s team consists of experienced linguists, all graduates of Polish studies in Wrocław: dr hab. Tomasz Piekot – the team’s manager, dr Grzegorz Zarzeczny, dr Marcin Poprawa and dr Marta Śleziak. We are all linguists, academic teachers, plain language trainers, and researchers of written communication.
The Active Luminescent Layers for Photonics: the project aims to create a material platform based on hybrid materials (organo-inorganic). The basis of these materials would be silicon oxide doped with organic colourants or compounds of rare earth elements, which would create a luminescent-active ingredient. Due to this modification, it would be possible to create systems such as light sources or light detectors. It is important to remember that in order to create silica layers, they need to be subjected to thermal processing in a temperaturę of at least 300°C. However, a temperature this high usually leads to the degradation of the organic colourants, so the project is focused on compounds with high thermal stability.
