Word and Sentence in Slavic Languages – conference

This year’s 16th edition of the academic conference Word and Sentence in Slavic Languages: Description – Confrontation – Translation (October 20–21 at the University of Wrocław) is a chance to present the research in the latest studies of this language group that Polish also happens to be a part of. Although the world of linguistics may seem elitist to an average listener, the conference’s programme includes an academic reflection regarding well-known facts from everyday life. For example, there will be readings explaining how the experiences of war, aggression, and violence leave a mark on the language, how the language is used by modern propaganda and how it was used in the past, but there will also be lectures on the subject of the media discourse we are a part of, the language of literary works, and the issues of the interlingual and intercultural communication that is so common nowadays.

This international event, this year led by a bohemian – dr hab. Jarosław Malicki – will be attended by linguists, researchers of social communication, and culture experts from 15 countries (Poland, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Austria, Germany, Finland, Spain, and… Australia!).

Apart from the conference, you will also be able to attend a recital of a well-known singer, Iryna Zhytynska, who – accompanied by Ashot Babrouski on the piano – will perform a programme consisting of songs and opera arias.

The opening ceremony of the conference under the patronage of His Magnificence Rector UWr prof. Robert Olkiewicz and the Faculty of Letters’ Dean, dr hab. Arkadiusz Lewicki, prof. UWr, will take place at the University Library of the UWr on Thursday, October 20, at 9 am.
