“What a beautiful catastrophe! Where did volcanoes come from in Europe and can they make (even more) trouble for us?”
Volcanoes have influenced humanity since the beginning of time – providing fertile soils, geothermal springs and inspiring thoughts of a world of underground gods. However, they have also led to huge catastrophes and even the annihilation of entire civilisations. In today’s Europe, we think we are protected from disasters caused by volcanoes – they are encased in vibration sensors and constantly monitored by satellites. But are we really protected from the eruptions of the volcano god’s anger? And do all the volcanoes of Europe form smoking cones, warning of their power from afar? Dr Magdalena Matusiak-Małek will talk about known and unknown volcanoes of Europe and the unpleasant surprises they can prepare for us during her lecture entitled “What a beautiful catastrophe! Where did volcanoes come from in Europe and can they cause us (even more) trouble?”. The lecture will take place in hybrid form on Saturday, 19.XI at 10:00 in room 503 of the Institute of Geological Sciences, pl. M. Borna 9.
