Christmas traditions and customs in Anglo-Saxon countries – an interview with professor Leszek Berezowski
Christmas is just two weeks away. The holiday season is very rich in symbolism, beliefs but also customs that we have (un)consciously adopted from Western culture over the centuries. How much English culture is in Polish Christmas? How do British and Americans celebrate Christmas? We talk about the history, carols, traditions and customs of Christmas in Anglo-Saxon countries with professor Leszek Berezowski of the Institute of English Studies at the University of Wrocław, an outstanding translator of English, a specialist in English prepositions and specialised translation as well as an expert on St. Nicholas.
“In Britain, the history of Christmas goes back much deeper than in Poland because Christianity arrived much earlier there. As early as the 8th century, King Alfred the Great ordered in his code of laws that subjects and His Majesty should be given twelve days to celebrate Christmas.” – says prof. dr hab. Leszek Berezowski.
