Medical examination for men aged between 50 to 60 years

Department of Human Biology of the University of Wrocław invites men aged between 50 to 60 years to participate in scientific research aimed at assessing the association of selected physical, psychological and lifestyle characteristic with health condition. Examination are free, participants will receive a full set of results, including hormone tests, liver function tests, level of testosterone ,level of vitamin D (laboratory test are conducted by Diagnostics), dental examination conducted by Enel-med. To apply to take a part in the research, simply complete the application form:  https://forms.office.com/r/Bq3m0wtD36. In case of any questions, contact the research team via e-mail address: badania.50p@uwr.edu.pl, or directly:  dr Agnieszka Żelaźniewicz (agnieszka.zelazniewicz@uwr.edu.pl)  dr Judyta Nowak-Kornicka (judyta.nowak@uwr.edu.pl).

The research is financed under the fund of National Science Centre, OPUS grant (title of a grant: ‘’Biological condition of middle-aged men as an indicator of the body’s capacity to bear the physiological cost of masculinisation”, grant number: 2021/41/B/NZ8/00751).

Where the research takes place?

The first and third visit will take place in the Department of Biology of Human of the University of Wrocław at ul. Przybyszewskiego 63, 51-148 in Wrocław. The dental visit will take place in the office of Enel-Med. in Wrocław, on ul. Szczytnicka11, 50-382. An appointment will be made at the time of the first visit.

By participating in the research, you will receive a set of valuable information about your own health condition. Conducted examination will allow, among other things:

  • Check general health condition based on the results of extended blood tests (blood count, liver functions tests; level of cholesterol, triacylogliceroles, glucose and insulin, keratin, homocysteine, electrolyte, uric acid, osteocalcin; inflammation and autoantibody)*.
  • Conduct a determination of the level of important hormones for health (testosterone, oestradiol, cortisol, growth hormone,  thyroid  hormones and adipose tissue)*.
  • Measure the level of PSA in the blood – Prostate-specific antigen*.
  • Measure vitamin D level.
  • Determine the level of antibodies anti-SARS-Cov-2 (Phospholipid Units and Immunoglobulin)
  • Assess the efficiency of the respiratory (on the basis of spirometry)
  • Assess the bone structure (on the basis of analysis of density of the calcaneus)
  • Assess the condition and biological age of the skin.
  • Measure resting metabolic rate.
  • Conduct an examination of coronary arteries (ABI examination) – to assess the risk of development of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease.
  • Conduct response time examination.
  • Conduct an examination for staphylococcus aureus in nose and throat.
  • Precisely determine body composition (measure subdermal and celiac fat, muscle mass and body water content).
  • Conduct a comprehensive dental examination by a dentist including panoramic radiograph.
  • The analysis will be conducted in at a certified analytical laboratory (Diagnostics) and will be of full diagnostic value.

All research participants will receive a full set of results from the above tests!

As places are limited, we invite those who fulfils the criteria to apply as soon as possible!

What does the research look like?

The research will consist of three visits: First visit will take place on a day agreed with the research team in the early morning hours (7am-11am). Visit may take about 3 to 4 hours and in the course of it it will be conducted:

– draw the blood sample

-swabs from nose and throat

– body measurements (body composition, body weight, circuits)

– cardiopulmonary exercise testing (for instance: spirometry)

– other assessments including condition of peripheral artery, biological age of a skin, bone mineral density, basal metabolic rate.

-facial photographs

-questionnaire survey

A visit to the dentist at an indicated dental clinic on the agreed date. The examination will include a comprehensive assessment of the condition of the teeth and the taking of a panoramic radiograph and may take 30 to 45 minutes.

The third visit, which will take place about 3 to 4 weeks later in the indicated by research team date and will include taking a nasopharyngeal swab and reporting test results. The visit will take about 15 to 30 minutes.
