
Prof. dr hab Stefan Mróz has passed away
It is with deep regret that we report the death, on December 31, 2022, prof. dr hab. Stefan Mroz, a long-time employee of the Institute of Experimental Physics and its director in 1987-1991, the first dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy (1996-2002).
The deceased was laid to rest in the cemetery at ul. Kiełczowska, with a family funeral held on January 5, 2023.
Honor to His Memory!
Prof. dr hab. STEFAN MRÓZ, was born in 1938 in Rzeplin. He received his master’s degree in physics in 1960; his Ph.D. degree in physics in 1969; his postdoctoral degree in 1976; the title of assistant professor of physics in 1986 and the title of full professor in 1992.
He was director of the Institute of Experimental Physics of UWr from 1987 to 1991; director of the Institute of Physics of J. Kochanowski’s WSP in Kielce in the academic year 1985/86; dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of UWr from 1996 to 2002; head of the Department of Electron Spectroscopy of the IFD of UWr from 1981 to 2007; member of the Committee on Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (among others. vice-chairman of the Committee on Catalysis and Surface Physicochemistry of the Wrocław Branch); member of the Polish Physical Society (served as secretary, member of the board of directors, member of the audit committee of the Wrocław Branch); director of the 5th and 12th International Seminar on Surface Physics, and member of most of the scientific committees of this conference.
The professor worked closely with many foreign research centers, including: in 1984-1993 with the Institute of Physics of the Technical University of Clausthal, Germany (prof. Ernst Bauer, dr h.c. UWr), research internship there; in1988-1990 with the Institute of Technical Physics of the University of Dresden, Germany (dr V. Fritzsche); in 1990-1997 with the Blaise Pascal University of Clermont-Ferrand, France (prof. Bernard Gruzza). He promoted nine PhDs in physical sciences, among them three postdoctoral fellows and two professors. He was co-editor of international scientific journals: Surface Science (1988, 1989, 1991) and Vacuum (1994); author or co-author of more than 100 publications, three patents, three books and five popularization works.
He has received many decorations and awards, including: Gold Cross of Merit, Medal of the Commission of National Education, Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, 300th anniversary medal of UWr, Gold Medal of the University of Wroclaw, two individual and one team award from the Minister of Science and Higher Education (1970, 1977, 1989).
