Medical molecular biotechnology – NEW FIELD OF STUDY

In the academic year 2023/2024, we are launching a new field of study at the University of Wrocław in the form of full-time long-cycle studies – MEDICAL MOLECULAR BIOTECHNOLOGY at the Faculty of Biotechnology. Recruitment for this and other fields of study will start on 1 June!

The long-cycle field of study in medical molecular biotechnology at the Faculty of Biotechnology UWr is a field of study for students with specific scientific interests. The innovative study programme will enable students to acquire state-of-the-art knowledge, learn excellent methodological skills, become familiar with a variety of research strategies and acquire the skills to solve scientific problems in the field of medical biotechnology independently.

Medical molecular biotechnology is a field of study that will provide comprehensive and thorough preparation for research work through an individualised approach to students’ education based on their practical participation in research teams from the fourth semester of study. The study programme reflects the specificity and high quality of research of the Faculty’s 15 research groups.

The learning objectives for the medical molecular biotechnology course include:

  • gaining advanced knowledge in medical science and biotechnology: cell biology, systems biology, biochemistry, genetics, immunology, microbiology, bioinformatics, among others;
  • learning about the structure and function of biomolecules, cells, tissues, systems and the human body, and the causes and consequences of their dysfunction at the molecular level;
  • acquiring the ability to integrate knowledge from different disciplines in order to explain the complex phenomena and processes underlying the biomedical sciences;
  • practical mastery of laboratory techniques and advanced research methods by solving scientific problems and carrying out independent projects;
  • acquiring the skills to formulate and test hypotheses, plan research tasks and select appropriate methods to carry them out;
  • acquiring the ability to interpret the results obtained, carry out advanced statistical and bioinformatics analyses, prepare reports and scientific articles and prepare research projects based on scientific literature;
  • acquiring scientific discussion skills; identifying errors and solving problems in experimental work;
  • gaining an understanding of how the experience gained and the results of basic research can be used in practice;
  • acquiring the ability to interact and work in a group to plan experiments and solve problems, organise and direct the work of a team taking into account the principles of bioethics and health and safety at work, present a pro-health and science-promoting attitude.

Medical biotechnology is a rapidly growing branch of science, industry and the economy. Particularly during a pandemic, the development of the health sciences sector has become a priority and the role of the biotechnology industry is increasing significantly. An increasing number of biotechnology projects are emerging in Poland from academic and commercial institutions.

The medical molecular biotechnology degree programme responds to the great need to educate people who not only have in-depth knowledge, are familiar with strategies and modern research methods, but also who can solve scientific problems, think creatively, think outside the box and take on the challenges facing modern medicine.

Candidates who wish to be considered for recruitment to medical molecular biotechnology should take chemistry, biology, mathematics or physics, English as their baccalaureate degree (Matura exam). Recruitment rules and other important information regarding the medical molecular biotechnology intake can be found on the website.
