UWr in the CWUR 2023 world ranking

The University of Wrocław was ranked 870th in the world in the international ranking published yesterday by the Center for World University Rankings 2023, which places us among the 4.3% of the best universities around the globe. In Europe, we ranked 342.

When it comes to Polish universities, we are in fourth place. The Jagiellonian University, the University of Warsaw, and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań took the first three places, while the Adam Mickiewicz University was only 0.4 points ahead of us. Just like last year, the University of Wrocław took first place in the region, ahead of all other Lower Silesian universities. Our strongest indicator turned out to be the academic staff, in this category we were classified as the only Polish university, taking 263rd place in the world. We were ranked 483rd in the world and 3rd in the country in the category of quality of education.

More than 20.5 thousand universities and scientific institutions from around the world were rated in the ranking. The final list contains the top 2,000 of them.

A total of 40 Polish universities and research institutions were included in the top 2,000 this year.

The ranking is created by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), a consulting institution that provides strategic advice on improving the quality of higher education and academic research. CWUR publishes global university rankings trusted by students and academics, known for their objectivity, clarity, and consistency.

The CWUR list, published since 2012, is not based on information provided by universities or surveys. Data for the ranking are taken from various types of databases and commonly available sources. CWUR compares colleges and research institutes in four categories:

Quality of education (25%)

Employability of graduates (25%)

Academic staff (10%)

Research (40%)

In the most important category, which is scientific research, it is not only quantity that counts but also quality. Both the total number of scientific publications of a given institution are taken into account here, as well as publications in the most prestigious journals (so-called top-tier), articles in the most influential journals, and citations.

The quality of education is evaluated by the number of university graduates who have won prestigious academic distinctions, considering the size of the university. In this category, the University of Wrocław was ranked 483rd in the world. In Poland, in case of the quality of education indicator, we are ranked third among all universities. Only the Warsaw University of Technology and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences are ahead of us.

Graduate employability is measured by the number of graduates who hold senior management positions in the world’s largest companies, considering the size of the university. These are the companies on the Forbes Global 2000 list.

The quality of the academic staff is evaluated by the ranking institution based on the number of employees who have won prestigious scientific awards (international awards, medals, etc.). The quality of the academic staff is the strongest point of our university. The University of Wrocław was ranked 263rd in the world in this category.

It is worth noting that as many as three out of four ranking categories (education, graduate employability, staff) are rated using quite specific indicators, adapted primarily to the American or British higher education system, which makes it difficult for Polish universities to compete here. Thus we are pleased with the position the University of Wrocław achieved in the CWUR ranking.
