Krzysztof Zanussi visited the University of Wrocław
On 24 May, the University of Wrocław hosted Professor Krzysztof Zanussi at the Oratorium Marianum, who gave a lecture on „Prawda życia, prawda filmu” (‘The truth of life, the truth of film’). Before that, professor Zanussi took part in the conference „Prawda i jej pozory w sztuce filmowej” (‘Truth and its Appearances in Film Art’) in the Chair of Jewish Studies. And later, we also had the opportunity to see the film “Iluminacja” by Krzysztof Zanussi in a room at the Faculty of Law, Administration and Economics on the 50th anniversary of the first screening of the film.
“Iluminacja” is a film essay by K. Zanussi, well-known in Poland and worldwide, which is set in an academic environment under communism. The protagonist is a physics student searching for the meaning of life both in and out of science. The extreme materialism and scientism prevailing around him do not make this task any easier. Despite the unfavourable circumstances, at great cost, the protagonist finds this meaning and happiness. The path to both, shown in the film, has become a universal message for subsequent generations of scientists and students. The film represents the most important trend in Polish cinema since the end of the Second World War called the cinema of moral unrest. Many thanks to the audience for attending the event, and to professor Bogusław Paź for organising the meeting.
