Rector’s statement

In relation to numerous questions concerning the unlawful prevention of a meeting of the Student Parliament of the University of Wrocław on 24 January this year, by a group of young people, I would like to inform you that, at the request of the Board of the Student Self-Government of the University of Wrocław, I issued an order to my subordinate services to take measures enabling the lawful and smooth continuation of today’s interrupted meeting on 24 January.

The meeting was interrupted as a result of a group of individuals entering the Student Parliament meeting who, in violation of the law and good academic manners, actually prevented the President from conducting the meeting. The purpose of the Parliament meeting was to elect representatives to the University Electoral College. We were therefore faced with an attempt, unprecedented in the recent history of the University, to undermine academic democracy and violate the integrity of the electoral process.

The forcible resolution of disputes contravenes the fundamental principles of law and democracy and also harms the academic tradition.

I would like to remind you that according to Article 110, section 9 of the Act on Higher Education and Science, a higher education institution is obliged, among other things, to ensure the conditions necessary for the functioning of the student self-government. Article 23 of the Act also enumerates what the tasks of the rector are, in particular – to ensure the implementation of the regulations in force at the university. There is no consent to breaking the law at the University of Wrocław!

prof. Robert Olkiewicz, Rector of the University of Wrocław
