Scientific Conference “Ziemie Odzyskane (literatura – komiks – film)”
The Faculty of Historical Sciences of the University of Wrocław, the Faculty of History, and the Faculty of Humanities of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, along with the “Remembrance and Future” Centre in Wrocław, invite you to participate in the interdisciplinary scientific conference Ziemie Odzyskane (literatura – komiks – film) ((Recovered Lands (literature – comics – film)). The conference will take place in Wrocław from May 15th to 17th, 2024.
The conference is organized as part of the „Wokół fenomenu kulturowego” series, which was initiated at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń (the organizers). It is dedicated to the most important phenomena of film, visual arts, and literature culture during the Polish People’s Republic era. So far, the following conference meetings have taken place: „Czterej pancerni i pies”, „Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek”, „Stawka większa niż życie”, „Twórczość komiksowa Janusza Christy”, „Pan Samochodzik i…”
” Recovered Lands” is a phenomenon with tremendous research potential. Despite the implementation of successive scientific projects related to the mentioned issues (one of the latest being “Region czy regiony? Ziemie Zachodnie i Północne 1945-1989” endorsed by the “Remembrance and Future” Centre in Wrocław and finalised in 2022 with a publication), it still opens up new fields for exploration for researchers. The aim of our conference is to examine “Recovered Lands” as a cultural phenomenon. Among its participants, we want to reflect on the presence of various dimensions of this place in the culture of the years 1945-1989.
By outlining such a broad research perspective, we invite representatives of various scientific disciplines to participate in the conference, especially historians, literary scholars, sociologists, film scholars, linguists, art historians, political scientists, cultural scholars, and historians of ideas. We hope that among the proposed research perspectives listed below, you will find intriguing areas requiring recognition and examination. We propose addressing such issues as:
- Literature, comics, film in “Recovered Lands” – creative environments, cultural institutions, audiences
- The image of “Recovered Lands” in literature, comics, film, and iconography
- Re(construction) of “Recovered Lands” in various dimensions of culture
- Myth(s) of “Recovered Lands” and their dimension(s) in culture (including the myth-making category of pioneering, the utopia of the provinces, the genesis myth)
- Culture in the process of demythologizing “Recovered Lands”
- The problem of interrupted cultural continuity of “Recovered Lands”
- Metanarrative of settlement experiences in “Recovered Lands” in literature and film
- “Recovered Lands” – propagandistic dimension vs. culture (including de-Germanization/regermanization, polonization, repolonization, historical memory politics)
- Pop culture of “Recovered Lands” – “Recovered Lands” in pop culture
- Dimensions of the culture of “Recovered Lands” in the streams of new humanities
- Cultural space of “Recovered Lands” as a palimpsest
- Natural and cultural landscape of “Recovered Lands” as a film set
Of course, we are very open to participants’ original proposals.
The conference is organised in a hybrid mode.
