
Our biologists on the Polish State Council for Nature Conservation
The Polish State Council for Nature Conservation is an independent team of experts, which was appointed on 20 March 2024 by several dozen people, including two research and teaching staff from the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Wrocław, prof. Krzysztof Świerkosz and dr Robert Maślak.
One of the Council’s most important tasks will be to increase the areas covered.
The Polish State Council for Nature Conservation (PROP) is a consultative and advisory body of the minister responsible for the environment. In particular, its tasks include:
- assessing the implementation of the Nature Conservation Act;
- providing opinions on strategies, plans and programmes on nature protection;
- assessing the implementation of the programme for the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity;
- providing opinions on draft legal acts concerning nature protection;
- presenting proposals and opinions on nature protection matters and popularising nature protection.
Dr Robert Maślak, zoologist, expert on the behaviour and welfare of non-domestic animals in captivity, amphibian and reptile biology and conservation, involved in bear research, animal welfare issues, bioethics.
Dr hab. Krzysztof Świerkosz, prof. UWr, is involved in geobotany and nature conservation, particularly plant community diversity and the conservation of flora and mycoflora in south-western Poland. His current focus is on changes in plant communities under the influence of climate change, biological invasions and environmental pollution in Europe. He was involved in shaping the Natura 2000 network in Poland. Author or co-author of more than 30 conservation plans and conservation task plans for national parks, landscape parks, nature reserves and Natura 2000 sites.
As a reminder, the Minister of Climate and Environment also appointed a team at the beginning of February to “strengthen the protection of naturally valuable and socially important forests”. Prof. Krzysztof Swierkosz was also included in the team of several members.
