Prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz becomes the rector-elect of the UWr

On 22 March 2024, an election meeting of the University Electoral College was held at the University of Wrocław. In the first round, the College has already elected prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz as the Rector of the University of Wrocław for the term 2024 – 2028.

The University Electoral College voted as follows:

– prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz received 114 votes
– prof. dr hab. Robert Wieczorek received 13 votes
– prof. dr hab. Marcin Wodziński received 71 votes

BIOGRAPHY OF THE RECTOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WROCŁAW

Prof. dr hab. Robert Olkiewicz, physicist, Rector of the University of Wrocław from 2022 to 2024.

He was born in 1962 in Wrocław. He studied physics at the University of Wrocław. He obtained his doctoral degree in mathematics in 1992 at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. After his doctorate, he started working at his alma mater at the Institute of Theoretical Physics. Here he obtained a postdoctoral degree in physics with a specialisation in mathematical physics (2000). He was awarded the title of Professor of Physical Sciences in 2004. Trainee at Imperial College in London and scholarship holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the University of Bielefeld.

Head of the Department of Mathematical Methods (2001-2005), director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics (2005-2008, 2020-2022), dean of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy (2008-2012), Vice-Rector for general affairs (2012-2016), director for computerisation (2016-2020).

Manager and principal investigator of several grants from the Committee for Scientific Research, organiser of two Winter Schools of Theoretical Physics, the 21st Max Born Symposium, chairman of the organising committee of the “Asia – Europe Physics Summit” (2011). His research interests focus on mathematical methods in physics, mathematical foundations of statistical models and quantum open systems.
