Vocal workshop “In the circle of sacred women of medieval Silesia”

Date:

27 April 2024, 11:30 - 28 April 2024, 15:49

As part of extra-curricular educational initiatives funded by the UWr Rector, a vocal workshop entitled „W kręgu świętych kobiet średniowiecznego Śląska” (“In the Circle of Sacred Women of Medieval Silesia”) will be held at the Institute of Musicology.

The vocal workshop project “W kręgu świętych kobiet średniowiecznego Śląska” aims to extend the teaching of early music with a practical aspect, which is usually relegated to the background in university education. The workshop will provide an opportunity to learn about the works performed in Silesia in the 15th century, thereby spreading knowledge of the cultural heritage of the region, which is an important research area for the Institute of Musicology. The selected sources include the Środa Śląska cancionale, the Żagań partes and fragments of musical notations stored in the Wrocław University Library. From among the rich stock of compositions, we would like to focus on those dedicated to women considered saints of the Catholic Church.

The workshop will provide an opportunity to learn not only about the repertoire itself, but also about the methods of its transmission (preference for oral transmission) and ancient instrumentation. Basic aspects of medieval music theory will also be introduced. In addition to acquiring knowledge, participants will gain practical skills in proper voice emission (and how to practise it), as well as the group work required to sing together. The event will be conducted by members of the medieval music ensemble Vox Imaginaria: singer Julieta González-Springer (currently a doctoral student at the Institute of Musicology) and Ryszard Lubieniecki (assistant professor at the Institute of Musicology), who plays the ancient keyboard instruments – organ portative and clavisimbalum.

No previous musical experience or training is required to participate in the workshop, so it is addressed to all interested students of the University (not only musicology students). The event will be conducted in Polish (with the possibility of translating necessary issues into English and/or Spanish).
