From 1970 to 1993, he headed the Department of the History of German Literature until the year 1848. His main research interests included German Romantic literature, German-Polish cultural relations and the culture of Silesia. In 1994, he became head of the literature section at the Stiftung Haus Oberschlesien (Ratingen-Hoesel), where he conducted research and editorial projects related to Upper Silesia. He promoted a number of doctoral students, educated many generations of students, and was an excellent academic lecturer.
