Polski Toxophilus – premiere on 15 June in Osobowicki Forest
Quite a few events of the University of Wrocław Press are taking place this week, but we especially encourage you to take part in an unusual premiere – this Saturday, during the III Memorial of Piotr Gonet in the Osobowicki Forest, WUWr will show the first Polish translation of the 16th-century work Toxophilus. The School of Archery in Two Books (the first treatise on archery and one of the first didactic texts in English!). Beautifully produced, in a cloth binding, the book is an interesting item for all those who would like to discover how the galloping times and customs of Renaissance Europe can be commented on using the example of the bow. Roger Ascham, an English courtier and humanist, created it at a time when archery as a craft of war was being supplanted by firearms. Thanks to Toxophilos, it became a noble sport, popular first among the aristocracy and then permeating all social classes. At the same time, the tales of Robin Hood of Sherwood were already widespread! The Polish edition translated by dr Michał Surma and dr Katarzyna Byłów is dedicated to the memory of Piotr Gonet – an outstanding archer and social activist, creator of the Wrocław Traditional Archery Centre. Ascham’s practical tips are enriched with contemporary illustrations by Andrzej Graniak. The content is accompanied by necessary footnotes and explanatory notes and in the 21st century it still remains one of the most interesting archery manuals.
The book is a grassroots initiative, and is published with the support of sklepluczniczy.pl, and the W Czarnym Lesie studio, and thanks to the initiative’s many donors at the drop!
