Workshop as part of an award-winning translation project

Last semester, students of the translation specialisation from the Institute of German Studies participated in an international teaching project Literaturübersetzung im deutsch-polnischen Kulturdialog [Literary translation in German-Polish cultural dialogue].

In addition, students from five German and four Polish universities took part in this project. The project culminated in a multi-day translation workshop held at the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice and the European University Viadrina (programme and description on the website of the European University Viadrina).

The theme of this year’s project was the work of Wisława Szymborska and translations of her poetry into German. A group of Wrocław germanists together with students of cultural studies from the European University Viadrina, as part of a seminar collaboration, analysed Wisława Szymborska’s correspondence with the translator of Polish literature into German, Karl Dedecius, stored in the Karl Dedecius Archive in Słubice. The results of the study allow the poet’s relationship with the translator to be reconstructed, and the issues raised, including those related to poetic and translational creativity, to be identified. Young researchers paid particular attention to Wisława Szymborska’s stickers, which were a regular part of the poet’s correspondence and at the same time an expression of her artistic tastes.

Another theme of the project will be the translation work of Henryk Bereska. The project was awarded the accompanying Viadrina Prize last year (more information). The project’s academic supervisor on behalf of the University of Wrocław is dr hab. Anna Małgorzataewicz, prof. UWr.
