GEOBALTIC ADVENTURE 2024 – Sailing Through Time
Already on 4 August, the Student Scientific Association of Geologists, under the honorary patronage of His Magnificence Rector prof. Robert Olkiewicz, sets out for the Baltic Sea on board the STS Generał Zaruski. This beautiful wooden sailing ship, the flagship of the City of Gdańsk, is an heir to General Mariusz Zaruski’s idea of sailing education for Poles and a monument to the art of boatbuilding.
The aims of the twelve-day student cruise through Germany, Denmark and Sweden are both a scientific journey through time from the Precambrian to the present day and a maritime education for young people on board a unique gaff ketch with traditional rigging and vast maritime traditions. During the voyage, the students, under the supervision of their academics, will participate in scientific research, sampling rocks, minerals and fossils, take part in lectures and discussions, visit foreign scientific centres and perform watchkeeping, set sails, learn navigation and cook for everyone. And all this on the Baltic Sea, which is not spoilt for choice with the weather.
Our crew was looked after by the Great Yacht Captain Jerzy Jaszczuk, one of the most titled Polish captains, long-time captain of the STS Pogoria, winner of the Kolos award, founder and president of the association ‘Edukacja pod Żaglami’, honoured with the Medal for Special Merits to Polish Sailing.
The cruise’s media partner is the largest portal popularising science in Poland, Nauka. To Lubię (Science. I Like) headed by dr Tomasz Rożek, who will conduct classes in scientific media communication on board the sailing ship.
The crew took the words of the ship’s patron saint as the theme of the voyage:
When I stand before St Peter and he asks me how to report, I will answer: ‘I have broken the spindles of captivity with a hammer, I have led the Poles to the mountains and to the sea, so that they became hard as granite, and their souls were as pure and deep as the sea’ General Mariusz Zaruski, Wśród wichrów i fal, 1935
