The 4th World Conference on Physics Education
Between 26.08.2024 and 30.08.2024, the 4th World Conference on Physics Education will be held at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland. The organisers of this prominent event are: Faculty
of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University, the International Research Group on Physics Teaching (GIREP) and the International Union for Pure and Applied Physics, in collaboration with the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Wrocław. The event was held under the honorary patronage of the UWr rector, prof. Robert Olkiewicz.
The theme of the 4th WCPE is ‘Wspólne przyjmowanie zmian'(eng. Embracing change together). The idea of the conference is to exchange experiences between scientists from all over the world involved in physics education. During the conference, they will discuss various aspects of education in a world of rapid change and new challenges – for a better mutual understanding and to reinvigorate teaching methods for the younger generation and society as a whole.
The conference will feature a series of sessions, symposia and workshops as a means of sharing experiences. Participants will address problems and challenges facing physics education common to educational systems in different countries around the world. (e.g. adapting curricula to the challenges of the modern world, using active teaching methods, preparing students for professions related to the development of science and technology, changes in the role of the teacher, physics teacher education in times of staff shortages, etc.).
The organisers have also invited teachers from Poland and abroad to participate in the conference as collaborators and partners of researchers conducting research in the field of physical education. This unique initiative aims to encourage teachers to present their own innovative methods to the international community of educators and to conduct their own small-scale research (as part of Practitioner Inquiry) to reflect on their own teaching practice.Such activities aim to encourage all those involved in physics education to identify their own needs and competences and to strengthen collaboration, which is currently mainly incidental, making it difficult to adapt to a rapidly changing world.
The first World Conference on Physics Teaching (1st WCPE) was held in Istanbul (2012), the second in São Paulo (2016), and the third (2020) was to be held in Hanoi (Vietnam), but due to the pandemic it was organised online in 2021 by the National University of Education in Hanoi (Vietnam), in collaboration with the University of Wrocław and the University of Guayaquil (Ecuador).
