Our graduates at the Książ Castle

The Książ Castle in Wałbrzych and the Princess Daisy von Pless Foundation would like to invite you to another meeting as part of the ‘O historii na żywo’ series. This time it will also be an opportunity to have a scientific discussion with our master’s students of art history.

The agreement concluded in 2020 between Książ Castle and the University of Wrocław includes, among other things, the organisation of competitions for master’s and doctoral theses on subjects related to the Książ castle-park complex and the implementation of joint research projects.

On Tuesday, 3 September, at 6 p.m., in the Curve Room on the second floor of the Książ Castle, a meeting will be held entitled ‘Zamek Książ inspiracją i drogą do kariery’. The guests will be Professor Rafał Eysmontt’s master’s students from the UWr Institute of Art History – Nell Prorok, Weronika Krawczyk and Jakub Warzocha. The meeting will be chaired by Mateusz Mykytyszyn.

The master’s theses to be discussed during the meeting were written at the Faculty of Historical and Pedagogical Sciences, specifically at the Institute of Art History under the direction of prof. Rafał Eysymontt.

The works will be presented by: Jakub Warzocha (Zespół kominków w Zamku Książ w świetle XX-wiecznej przebudowy obiektu), Nel Prorok (Ikonografia Zamku Książ od XVII do XIX wieku) and Weronika Puczyńska (Popularyzacja Zamku Książ od XIX w. do współczesności).

A few words about the works:

Jakub Warzocha –

Zespół kominków w Zamku Książ w świetle XX-wiecznej przebudowy obiektu (The complex of fireplaces in Książ Castle in the light of 20th-century reconstruction of the building)

The subject of this study is a set of fireplaces from the Książ Castle, which has not been subject to scientific research so far. The castle’s fireplaces are particularly valuable as they are often the only original decorative element to have survived the turbulent times of World War II. These valuable elements of interior architecture, are material testimonies, dating from different periods of the foundation. Above all, however, they tell us about the ambitions and tastes of the last owner of the castle, Prince Hans Heinrich XV von Hochberg-Pless (1861-1938) and his English wife, Princess Daisy (1873-1943).

Nel Prophet –

Ikonografia Zamku Książ od XVII do XIX wieku (Iconography of Książ Castle from the 17th to the 19th century)

The history of Książ Castle over the centuries has been highly variable. Over the hundreds of years, numerous iconographies of the foundation have been created, allowing us to trace the fate of the building and its surrounding grounds. The depictions of the building in the first centuries of its existence (the Piast and Bohemian periods) have not survived or are not known to our times. The existing depictions show how the castle and the landscape around it changed over the years, thanks to the most famous owners of Książ – the Hochberg family – who ruled from the beginning of the 16th century until the 1940s. The main aim of the work was to find as many representations of the Książ castle as possible.

Weronika Puczyńska –

Popularyzacja Zamku Książ od XIX w. do współczesności (Popularisation of Książ Castle from the 19th century to the present day)

What makes certain places attractive to us as tourists? Why do crowds go to some places, while others are empty? How to gain popularity and attract visitors? Landscape, artistic and historical aspects promoted as early as the turn of the 18th and 19th century began to build the image thanks to which Książ Castle is now so famous in Poland and around the world. What makes Książ unique?
