Another grant for preliminary research for our biotechnologist

Dr Wojciech Wiertelak from the Faculty of Biotechnology has received a research grant entitled ‘Wpływ terapii galaktozą na transkryptom komórek ludzkich’. Five of our young scientists were included in the next NCN Miniatura grant.

Let us start with what is glycosylation? – It is a key process for almost all aspects of life, such as the development of multicellular organisms or the correct functioning of the immune and nervous systems – explains dr Wojciech Wiertelak of the UWr Faculty of Biotechnology.

More and more patients with congenital glycosylation disorders are being diagnosed every year. Some of these conditions are treated with monosaccharide supplementation. – Unfortunately, the molecular mechanisms of these diseases, as well as the therapy, are very poorly studied – notes Wojciech Wiertelak. – The realisation of the grant will allow me to study the transcriptome of cells with glycosylation disorders at the level of UDP-galactose transport and cells undergoing galactose supplementation – he explains.

The results obtained will be part of a preliminary study that will allow our researcher to apply for further grants.

The winners of the latest NCN Miniatura grants from the UWr also included:

dr Hanna Kędzierska from the Faculty of Modern Languages, Cultures and Literatures by receiving a grant for research entitled ‘Wpływ wymowy cudzoziemskiej na przetwarzanie błędów w idiomach: badanie psycholingwistyczne’;

dr Daria Derkacz from the Faculty of Biotechnology by receiving a grant for research entitled ‘Izolacja i określenie struktury β-glukanu pozyskanego ze ściany komórkowej szczepów Candida albicans z zaburzoną syntezą ergosterolu oraz ocena wpływu β-glukanu na odpowiedź zapalną i komórkową’;

dr Kamil Błaszczyński from the Faculty of Social Sciences by receiving a grant for research entitled ‘Test przekonań religijno-nacjonalnych – narzędzie badawcze’;

dr Julia Chudzian from the Faculty of Biotechnology by receiving a grant for research entitled ‘Alternatywne formaty przeciwciał rozpoznające receptor 3 czynników wzrostu fibroblastów do zastosowań terapeutycznych’.
