The UWr Historical Institute cordially invites you to the second season of the series “Szewskie czwartki” – interdisciplinary online lectures in which scientists exploring the intersection of historical, natural and earth sciences share their research findings.
On Thursday, 17 October at 6 p.m., a lecture entitled ‘Jaskinie Wyżyny Krakowsko-Częstochowskiej w średniowieczu i w czasach nowożytnych’ will be given by dr Michał Wojenka of the Institute of Archaeology of the Jagiellonian University, an outstanding researcher of medieval and modern settlements in caves.
Although the archaeology of caves is often associated mainly with the Palaeolithic period, influenced by the many spectacular discoveries since the 19th century that have shaped our understanding of the origins of man on Polish soil, dr Wojenka will draw attention to extremely interesting finds from the Middle Ages and modern times. His research indicates that many caves, for example, housed armed groups of people, which is not recorded in extant written sources from that period. This motif only appears in the legend of Władysław Łokietek, who was said to have sought refuge in the Ojców caves in 1306. Dr Wojenka’s discoveries have significantly expanded our knowledge of the function of caves in Małopolska in the Middle Ages and early modern times.
The lecture will take place on the Teams platform. (only in Polish)
