Success for the University of Wrocław’s psychology and science departments in the Shanghai GRAS ranking!
In the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2024, the University of Wrocław is among the 201-300 world’s top universities in the discipline of psychology. Last year, our position was 401-500. This is a big achievement for our university, as only five Polish academies were ranked in this discipline.
UWr took first place in the country ex aequo with Jagiellonian University. We were followed in the 301-400 group by Warsaw University and SWPS University ex aequo, and in the 401-500 group by Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń.
Another big success for our University was in physics (which was noted in the ranking for the first time), and mathematics. Both majors ranked among the 401-500 best in the world.
In physics, only 3 academies overtook us in the ranking: AGH University of Krakow, The University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University. In fourth place, along with our university, was physics conducted at the Warsaw University of Technology and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.
In the mathematics ranking, there are five Polish universities: the University of Warsaw, AGH, Jagiellonian University, the University of Poznan and the University of Wrocław. GRAS was created by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy agency, known for creating the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The GRAS ranking currently involving 55 university majors, started to be uploaded in 2017. GRAS contains disciplines in the fields of medicine, biology, social studies, and technical studies. The universities don’t need to send any data, all the information is downloaded from Web of Science and InCities. This year’s edition takes into account bibliometric data from 2019-2023. A total of 1,900 universities were included in the GRAS 2024 ranking in each of the 55 disciplines, out of 5,000 that were subject to evaluation.
In the most recent edition, the ranking methodology has changed. Currently, the academies are rated in those 5 categories:
- World-Class Faculty – the category involves four new ratings:
• laureate- the number of full-time scholars hired in the institution since April 2024, who received international awards in their field of study
• Highly cited researchers- most often cited researchers in their fields of study according to Clarivate
• Editor- the number of the members of the academic staff who currently serve as editors-in-chief of international journals indexed in Clarivate’s SCIE, SSCI and AHCI Journal Citation Report (JCR) as of December 2023.
• leadership- the number of academic staff employed by the institution who currently hold leadership positions at key international scientific institutions as of April 2024.
2. World-Class Output – this category comprises two ranks: TJ (top journal papers – the number of papers published in the best journals in given field) and Awards; Significant academic awards (including Nobel prizes and Fields medals).
3. Research impact – calculated using the Category Normalized Citation Impact (CNCI), which is the ratio of citations of articles published by the university in a given discipline to the average number of citations of articles in the same category, published in the same year and in the same type of journals;
4. High-Quality Research – category calculated using the Q1 indicator, denoting the number of university publications in the given field in journals in the first quartile in terms of Impact Factor
5. International Collaboration – The ratio of collaborative publications with international authors to the overall number of university publications
We would like to congratulate all of the researches from our university involved in the disciplines included in the ranking!
