
Prof. Georges Boulon, Doctor Honoris Causa of our University, passed away
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of prof. Georges Boulon, Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Wrocław, retired academician of the Faculty of Physics at Claude Bernard Lyon University1 in France, on 17 November 2024.
Professor was a devoted friend of the University of Wrocław collaborating with researchers from the Faculty of Chemistry for more than 35 years. He was an eminent physicist, an internationally renowned scientist specialising in atomic and molecular spectroscopy of luminescent materials, with particular emphasis on laser materials and nonlinear optical materials. He was a champion for generations of physicochemists from around the world.
Among his many honors were the prestigious ICL Prize in 2011, the Order of the Academic Palm, and Honorary Doctorate degrees from the Universities of Madrid, Wrocław
and Tarragona. In 2017, he was elevated to the rank of Knight of the National Order of Merit, which is the highest award for civilian merit. He was also an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts in Lyon and a visiting professor at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, the Universities of Oklahoma City and Wisconsin-Madison in the US, or the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai. He also chaired the international committee of ICL (International Conference on Luminescence), the largest international conference in the field.
We bid farewell to a Scientist of international stature and a Man of great heart. A person who left indelible memories. We will always cherish the fond memories we have of Professor Boulon, especially his excellent academic guidance and great, kind support for representatives of many generations of researchers. His kindness touched many people, his spirit will remain in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him,
and His scientific achievements will last throughout the world as His legacy.
Funeral ceremonies will be held on Saturday, 23 November 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bonaventure in Lyon.
