Gold Medal of Chemistry 2024 for Jan Kachnowicz from the University of Wrocław
The Gold Medal of Chemistry 2024 was awarded to Jan Kachnowicz, a student at the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Wrocław. His award-winning thesis is entitled: ‘Experimental and computational studies of Cu(II) and Zn(II)complexes with a peptide from MUC7 containing the HHH motif ’.
The work, prepared under the scientific supervision of dr Joanna Wątła and dr Aneta Jezierska, focuses on the study of a peptide isolated from human saliva, which belongs to the class of antimicrobial peptides. These compounds are a key hope in the fight against the growing problem of antibiotic resistance.
In his research, Jan Kachnowicz used an innovative approach, combining laboratory experiments with computer modelling. The aim was to understand the structure of the peptide in detail and to elucidate its unique biological properties.
This work represents a significant step towards a better understanding of the mechanisms of action of antimicrobial peptides and their potential in the treatment of new infections.
