Volcanism in the Solar System
The UWr Institute of Geological Sciences invites to a lecture by prof. Marek Awdankiewicz, who will talk about volcanism in the Solar System.
The lecture will be held on January 24 at 3:00 pm at the Institute of Geological Sciences, pl. Maksa Borna 9, room 220.
Volcanic eruptions are among the most spectacular manifestations of the activity of the Earth’s interior. However, volcanism is not a peculiar feature of our planet alone. In an era of increasing space exploration and research, it is recognized on almost all rocky and icy planetary bodies and moons in the Solar System. But what do the volcanoes there look like, and why are some of them similar to Earth’s and others quite different? Where is the largest volcano in the Solar System located? Which planet can be called a “volcanologist’s paradise”? The variety of cosmic worlds and phenomena stimulate the imagination and amaze – and our solar system is just a foreground of the infinite Universe with billions of planets waiting for explorers and researchers.
