Project from the Faculty of Biotechnology in cooperation with the Czech Republic
Seven Polish-Czech and two trilateral projects involving teams from the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovenia have been selected for funding in the Weave-UNISONO 2024 competition. Among them is a project by dr hab. Małgorzata Zakrzewska, prof. UWr at the Faculty of Biotechnology.
The National Science Centre announced on 13 January 2025, that Polish researchers will complete grants worth more than PLN 9.5 million. Among the winners were also teams from Warsaw, Krakow and Katowice representing all groups of sciences: science and technology, humanities, social sciences and arts and life.
The life sciences are represented by prof. Małgorzata Zakrzewska of the Department of Protein Engineering at the UWr Faculty of Biotechnology, who will develop short DNA oligonucleotides (aptamers) that will selectively interact with FGF protein receptors (FGFRs) in collaboration with researchers from Masaryk University in Brno.
– The project will generate highly specific and potent inhibitors, as well as receptor activators, thus creating tools to control the activity of individual FGFR proteins – explains prof. Zakrzewska. – The results of the project will form the basis for future applications of aptamers in anti-cancer and regenerative therapies.
The Weave-UNISONO competition is the result of a multi-stakeholder collaboration between research funding institutions gathered in the Science Europe association. It was announced to simplify the procedures for the composition and selection of research projects in all scientific disciplines involving researchers from two or three European countries.
The Weave-UNISONO competition is open on a continuous basis. Teams planning to collaborate with partners from Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium-Flanders are encouraged to read the competition announcement and submit applications.
