A book on the work of the eminent cultural studies scholar, Stanisław Pietraszko, in print!
In the first quarter of this year, the University of Wrocław Press is preparing some interesting new publications. A proof copy of a book by prof. Jerzy Żurka from the Institute of Sociology of the University of Wrocław, entitled ‘Kulturoznawcza teoria kultury Stanisława Pietraszki a socjologia’ has already reached the editorial office. The author familiarised himself with the plano and was able to contribute his comments, and we were also able to take some commemorative photos of the meeting. Now we are just waiting for the actual printing.
The book is a journey through the oeuvre of Stanisław Pietraszko – one of Poland’s most eminent post-Second World War cultural theorists, creator of a new science whose sole object of study was culture. The professor was also the creator of the first studies in cultural studies in the world – the course was established at the University of Wrocław in 1972. The author shows the influence of Stanisław Pietraszko’s groundbreaking ideas on the science of culture and the formation of the Wrocław cultural studies community in the context of the debates and disputes of the second half of the 20th century.
More information about the publication can be found in the entry: Zapowiedź: Kulturoznawcza teoria kultury Stanisława Pietraszki a socjologia
The volume ‘Testamenty szlacheckie z ksiąg grodzkich i ziemskich ziemi chełmskiej z XVII wieku’ is now on sale!
The latest volume in the series of source publications, edited by dr hab. Paweł Klint, prof. UWr, dr hab. Konrad Rzemieniecki, and mgr Julia Pomian is now available at wuwr.eu. The book can be purchased in advance, and orders will be carried out after 5.02.2025.
The presented collection of nearly 180 documents is an extraordinary source of knowledge about the mentality of the nobility in the 17th century. After all, wills are not only a set of information on the disposition of property for heirs, but also a farewell to mortality and a reckoning with life. In their last will, a nobleman decided to profess his faith, give instructions concerning his funeral and support selected church institutions with money.
The publication contains wills written by both magnates (including Koniecpolski and Ossolińska) and middle-aged and poor noblemen from the Chelm region. These materials are full of personal confessions, family dramas and stories bordering on wars and epidemics. Unpublished documents that reveal the life, faith and everyday life of noble families.
This is more than a historical record – it is an inspiring resource that will draw you in, surprise you and allow you to understand the mentality of our ancestors.

Meeting with prof. Jarosław Syrnyk, author of the book ‘Łemkowskie rozdroże’ at the Ethnographic Museum
On Sunday, 23 February, at 3 p.m., the Ethnographic Museum will host a meeting with prof. Jarosław Syrnyk, around the book ‘Łemkowskie rozdroże’. The publication presents the dispute over the identity of Lemkos, which has been going on since the 19th century – whether they are merely an ethnic group or a nation with rights. It analyses the influence of history and politics on the formation of their identity, especially in the context of displacement and attempts to impose a uniform narrative about the past. The book has received the patronage of the weekly magazine ‘Nasze Słowo!’, and the cover is adorned with Dawid Zdobylak’s painting ‘W dniu końca świata’, which won second place at the Tarnów 2024 Art Biennale.
The meeting will be hosted by dr Marcelina Jakimowicz – ethnologist, culture expert, graduate of the Chair of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Wrocław.
