Rectors of universities: evaluation results do not reflect the state of science in Poland
The results of evaluation based on the current principles will not reflect the actual state of science in Poland – assessed the members of the Conference of Rectors of Universities in Poland (KRUP) in their position paper adopted two days ago. This is another voice of the academic community on the current evaluation of scientific activity.
In the opinion of the rectors, ‘distorted results of the evaluation carried out on the basis of the present rules will bring about serious and unjustified consequences in terms of distribution of subsidies, granting of scientific and teaching rights or access to science financing programmes’.
Therefore, the KRUP – chaired by prof. dr hab. Piotr Stepnowski, rector of the University of Gdansk – calls ‘for immediate action to avoid or minimise the negative effects of the current evaluation procedures’.
Rectors associated in the KRUP declare their readiness to cooperate and develop new evaluation principles.
The KRUP position is another voice of the scientific community on the current evaluation.
Evaluation is the assessment of the quality of scientific activity, carried out within the disciplines practised in a given entity. It is obligatory for universities, institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences and international scientific institutes employing at least 12 researchers in a given discipline.
The evaluation takes into account the individual achievements of the employees representing the discipline. Individual disciplines will be awarded scientific categories: A+, A, B+, B or C. These will determine the entitlement to conduct studies, doctoral schools, award degrees and titles, as well as the amount of subsidy the scientific unit receives from the budget.
