Professor Jan Mycielski passed away

We deeply regret to inform you that Jan Mycielski, an outstanding mathematician and long-standing employee of the Mathematical Institute of the University of Wrocław, passed away.

Jan Mycielski obtained his doctorate at the University of Wrocław in 1957 under the supervision of Stanisław Hartman (one year after obtaining his master’s degree). At the end of the 1960s, he emigrated to the United States. He was a professor at the University of Colorado for many years. He also worked at the University of California, Berkeley, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, among others.

He was awarded the Stefan Banach Prize of the Polish Mathematical Society in 1965.

Jan Mycielski is known for his groundbreaking results in, among others, set theory, topology and graph theory. He formulated (together with Hugon Steinhaus) the axiom of determination, which is currently crucial in the theory of large cardinal numbers.

He was 93 years old. He was scientifically active until his death.
