We have met the winners of the 8th edition of the “30 Creative Minds of Wrocław” competition

This award is given to inspiring individuals, groups, projects, and initiatives. This year, the Competition Committee recognised 31 people — including two of our researchers!

On the evening of 16 April, the stage of the Capitol Theatre belonged to those whose creativity, passion, and courage are shaping the development of Wrocław. This year’s edition saw a record-breaking number of entries — over 310 submissions, the highest in the competition’s history. Candidates were assessed in four categories: culture/art/design, business, science/technology, and society/city.

Among those awarded in the science/technology category were two of our scientists:

  • prof. dr hab. Tomasz Niedzielski – a specialist in geoinformatics and hydroinformatics, who was awarded a professorial title at the age of 38. A researcher at the University of Wrocław, he has harnessed the exact sciences to support rescue services. A human search system using drones, developed by his team, has been adopted by the Mountain Volunteer Search and Rescue Service (GOPR) and emergency units across many European countries, and even in Asia. Professor Niedzielski also led the development of a hydrological forecasting system designed to predict floods.
  • dr Paweł Gawrychowski, prof. UWr – from grand theories to World Championship medals in programming. A researcher at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Wrocław, he specialises in theoretical computer science. Born and raised in Wrocław, he is a graduate of Secondary School No. 14 and the University of Wrocław, where he also completed his PhD. He coaches champions — in 2005, the University of Wrocław’s team won a silver medal at the World Finals of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest in Shanghai. It was their first major success.
