DKMS invites you to take part in the next edition of the registration campaign for potential bone marrow and stem cell donors
Between 15 and 21 April 2024, the “HELPERS’ GENERATION” DKMS Foundation at the University of Wrocław will be conducting a student-led registration drive for potential bone marrow and stem cell donors. During this period, the Grand Finale of the project will take place at all Polish universities participating in the initiative, culminating in mass donor registrations. More than 50 universities from across the country are involved in the project. At the University of Wrocław, the project is led by students Klaudia Grodzicka and Aleksandra Pyż.
Since 2013, the HELPERS’ GENERATION project has brought together students from all over Poland around the idea of bone marrow donation and saving the lives of patients for whom a bone marrow transplant is often their only chance of survival. To date, the student community has organised a total of 1,626 registration drives, and 57 more are planned for this edition — including 7 at universities in Wrocław. Joining the fight against blood cancer are: the University of Wrocław, the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, the Wrocław Medical University, the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław, the Wrocław University of Economics and Business, and the Wrocław Business University of Applied Sciences. Thanks to previous drives held at universities in the Lower Silesian capital, 13,294 people have already joined the DKMS Foundation’s database of potential donors, and 134 of them have gone on to donate a part of themselves to save a patient in need of a transplant.
It is not only students who are eligible to register. Any generally healthy person aged between 18 and 55, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of no more than 40, can become a potential bone marrow donor. It only takes a few simple steps: come to one of the registration events organised at Wrocław’s universities, fill in a form, and take a cheek swab yourself. On site, DKMS Foundation volunteers will be available to answer any questions regarding bone marrow donation, the process of becoming a donor, and the procedure for sample collection.
The mission of the DKMS Foundation is to find a matching donor for every patient in the world in need of a haematopoietic stem cell transplant.
We warmly encourage everyone to get involved!
