UWr on the orbit of success – final triumph in POLSA’s eliminations and connection with the International Space Station

The University of Wrocław has been selected by the Polish Space Agency (POLSA) as one of two Polish universities that will conduct a live connection with the International Space Station (ISS). Our University has defeated multiple academic centres in prestigious eliminations, winning recognition for its involvement in science popularisation and educational activity.

Taking place in June, the event will end with a ten-minute connection with ISS, during which students will have an opportunity to ask Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski questions, who is a Polish astronaut and a crew member of IGNIS mission. The whole event will be held at the University of Wrocław with the occasion to participate in an all-day educational programme for children and youth.

International Space Station (ISS) is the biggest object created in Earth orbit by a human being. For over two decades, it functions as an advanced research laboratory, in which astronauts from all around the world carry out experiments within the scope of physics, biology, medicine and engineering. At the same time, these experiments are impossible to be conducted on Earth. ISS symbolises global academic and technological collaboration, being a joint enterprise of, i.a. NASA, ESA, Roscosmos, JAXA and CSA.

IGNIS mission, being one of the upcoming European crew missions, is both a Polish and European enterprise. Although it has been initiated and funded by Poland, its realisation is based on the cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Axiom Space, an American company. The purpose of the IGNIS mission is, among others, developing advanced technologies used in outer space and conducting essential scientific research. As a matter of this enterprise, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Polish) will take part in a series of experiments and educational activities aiming at familiarising society with the work of astronauts and the significance of space exploration.

Rzeszów University of Technology has been selected by POLSA as a second university to conduct a connection with ISS. University of Wrocław considers participation in this event an honour and a confirmation of its increasing role in domestic and international landscape of educational and academic value.

The exact date of the connection with the ISS has not been announced yet. The start of the IGNIS mission, initially planned for May 29th, has been rescheduled to June for technical and logistical reasons responsible for ensuring the operation’s safety. It is being predicted that the transmission will take place in the second or third week of June, provided that further delays will not occur.
