University of Wrocław at the Odra Days 2025
When water takes the stage, science becomes even more fascinating! You’ll see for yourselves on 24 May during the Odra Picnic at the University of Wrocław stands, where you’ll find hands-on experiments and a healthy dose of knowledge about this powerful element.
Bring your own water samples – from a well, tap, or swimming pool. We’ll test them together to check pH and salinity levels, and see whether they contain any metals, using ion-selective electrodes to help us.
The colourful Odra
There’ll also be experiments featuring the star of the event – the Odra River itself. Like colours? At the Colourful Oder workshop, you’ll not only enjoy a burst of colours but also learn about the river’s chemical composition. We’ll also show you what kinds of microorganisms live in the Oder.
Fun with water and physics
Step into the surprising and delightful world of physics! Does wood always float? Do stones always sink? Find out through exciting experiments that reveal how fascinating science can be when water is involved. Children will also have the chance to build their own physics toy using… swimming noodles!
A geological fossil adventure
Fancy a geological adventure? With a little water and some powdered rock – plaster – anyone will be able to create their own fantastic fossil casts. At our stand, we’ll also display selected fossils of animals and plants that lived on Earth millions of years ago.
A natural force tamed by science
Water is a powerful force – and our scientists are studying how to control it. At the University of Wrocław stand, experts will tell you about advanced river flood forecasting systems like HydroProg and AltHydro, the 2024 flood in the Odra catchment shown using satellite techniques and drones, and how the landscape affects water flow in the Wrocław section of the Odra.
The Oder Picnic will take place on Xawery Dunikowski Boulevard, from 12:00 to 18:00. The event is organised by the Wrocław City Council.
