Wrocław Odra Days 2025
On Saturday, 24 May, the Wrocław community gathered on Xawery Dunikowski Boulevard to mark the conclusion of the four-day Odra Days celebrations. A family picnic was organised, featuring culinary demonstrations by Mateusz Zielonka, winner of the 6th edition of MasterChef, and Adrian Stojewski, finalist of the World Paella Championships. Attendees enjoyed concerts, a parade of watercraft, and the opportunity to take a free boat trip on the River Odra.
The University of Wrocław was strongly represented at the event, with stands from the Faculty of Biotechnology, the Faculty of Chemistry, the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management as well as the Geological Museum. Each offered something unique for visitors of all ages.
At the Faculty of Biotechnology stand, guests could carry out scientific experiments themselves, such as examining microorganisms living in the Odra (through the preparation and presentation of microscope slides), and performing colourimetric tests to determine water parameters.
Visitors to the Faculty of Chemistry stand were invited to test the physicochemical properties of water they brought along – from garden wells, taps, or swimming pools. The experiments included testing pH, conductivity, salinity and detecting certain metals using ion-selective electrodes.
The Faculty of Physics and Astronomy prepared a series of fun activities combining water and physics. Children could learn why some objects float while others sink, build their own physical toys or take part in simple skill-based games.
In the tent hosted by the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management, research drones and educational posters were displayed, showing the palaeogeography of Wrocław and explaining how landforms affect the flow of the Odra through the city. These issues were discussed with reference to the 2024 flood, along with presentations of advanced river flood forecasting systems—HydroProg and AltHydro. Additional experiments demonstrated the chemical composition of Odra water.
The Geological Museum offered visitors the chance not only to view fossils of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago but also to create their own casts. A bit of water, some plaster and a dash of enthusiasm were enough to produce a truly memorable souvenir.
Event participants could also stop by the main University of Wrocław stall, where they found information for school-leavers, promotional leaflets, stickers, and other giveaways. Throughout the day, hundreds of people visited the university tents – among them, we hope, many of our future students.
