We choose the Barbarian of the Year 2025!

On 30 May 2025, at the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Wrocław, archaeology students from all over Poland competed in the ‘Barbarian of the Year’ tournament.

The conference began with an introductory lecture by dr Anna Józefowska-Domańska from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, after which the participants presented their interests related to the history of areas of Europe and Africa not directly under Roman control.

The main part of the event, a quiz on Barbaricum archaeology, took the form of the TV show ‘One in Ten’.

Students from the Jagiellonian University, the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin and a representative of the University of Wrocław advanced to the final. The winner was Wiktoria Janicka from UMCS.

The main prize was a silver replica of a brooch from a princely tomb found at the Wrocław-Zakrzów site.

The aim of the competition was to integrate archaeology students. Participants came from many Polish universities, including Wrocław, Warsaw, Kraków and Lublin.

The event was organised by the Vice-Rector for Research, prof. Artur Błażejewski, the Deputy Director for Teaching at the Institute of Archaeology, dr Marcin Bohr, Mr Mateusz Matula, winner of the first edition of the ‘Barbarian of the Year’ competition, and prof. Błażejewski’s doctoral students and students from the Barbaricum research club.
