“Na drodze do porozumienia. Relacje polsko-ukraińskie w XX i XXI wieku” – now available!
The history of Polish-Ukrainian relations is marked by tension, but also by efforts at mutual understanding. The past century, filled with dramatic events – from struggles for independence, through border changes, to the loss of sovereignty and armed conflicts – reveals not only difficult moments, but also shared aspirations of both nations.
It is precisely this topic that is the focus of the latest publication, Na drodze do porozumienia. Relacje polsko-ukraińskie w XX i XXI wieku. The book presents Polish-Ukrainian relations through the lens of efforts aimed at dialogue and building mutual trust. The authors – renowned historians and experts from both Poland and Ukraine – analyse how the past shapes current relations and what lessons can be drawn from history for the future of both societies.
The collection contains seventeen articles in Polish and Ukrainian, deepening knowledge of Polish-Ukrainian relations and pointing towards possible directions for future cooperation. The authors do not shy away from difficult subjects, such as nationality policies, forced migrations, or the consequences of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war for shaping identity and shared historical memory.
Edited by dr Magdalena Gibiec and prof. Grzegorz Hryciuk from the Historical Institute, the book is not just a collection of historical studies – it is a multifaceted narrative about memory, identity, and attempts at reconciliation. Its interdisciplinary approach and variety of perspectives will appeal to historians as well as anyone interested in better understanding the complexities of Central and Eastern European history. Special attention is given to the analysis of Russia’s policies and their impact on Polish-Ukrainian relations – an important contribution to dialogue, cooperation, and a deeper comprehension of historical processes.
It is worth noting that the publication has received high praise from the academic community. As prof. dr hab. Karol Sanojca from the University of Wrocław observes:
“The role of historians, especially in the context of the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, may be crucial for the future. It is worth writing about what unites Ukraine and Poland, in order to avoid pretexts for continuing the war over memory, to emphasise mutual goodwill and the desire for understanding, but at the same time not to avoid discussing existing problems.”
Prof. dr hab. Roman Wysocki from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University also highlights the book’s high scholarly level, noting that the contributors are outstanding specialists in the field. In his view, the diversity of formats – from scholarly essays to classic monographic studies – and the strong source base contribute to the publication’s quality, significance, and academic reliability. We warmly invite all those interested in history, politics, and contemporary challenges in Polish-Ukrainian relations to read the book. It is now available via the publisher’s website: Na drodze do porozumienia. Relacje polsko-ukraińskie w XX i XXI wieku | Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego
Polish-Ukrainian relations also include the history of the Lemkos
Last Friday, 6 June, the Copper Museum in Legnica hosted a meeting as part of the series „Między miastem a regionem. Dolny Śląsk po 1945 r. widziany z różnych perspektyw” organised by the Zajezdnia History Centre. It is worth mentioning this event, as this year’s edition is dedicated to reconciliation. The discussions in Legnica focused on reconciliation between different nations, groups, and communities, as well as with difficult heritage and history. Among the panellists was prof. Jarosław Syrnyk – a key figure, given that the history of the Lemkos could not be omitted. In photos shared across social media, we also saw Prof Syrnyk’s latest book, which reminds us that his newest work on the history of the Lemkos, titled “Łemkowskie rozdroże,” is still available on the publisher’s website and in leading bookshops! 😊
