University of Wrocław statement regarding the decision to withdraw the honorary patronage of one of the events in the lecture series by dr Gabor Maté
In light of the decision to withdraw the honorary patronage from one of the events planned as part of dr Gabor Maté’s lecture series, we would like to respond to the questions and opinions that have arisen.
The University of Wrocław deeply respects academic freedom, the diversity of views, and the right to debate – including on difficult and emotionally charged topics. As a public institution, we remain apolitical and committed to the principles of openness, integrity, and social responsibility. At the same time, we firmly oppose all forms of violence, hatred, and disinformation.
The decision to withdraw the patronage stemmed from the incomplete information provided in the original patronage request – the submitted documentation did not indicate the political context of some of the events planned as part of the series. We believe that granting Honorary Patronage should be based on full knowledge of the nature of the initiative with which the university is to be publicly associated.
Subsequent information revealed that the series includes, among others, an event entitled “Palestine Solidarity Day – an evening dedicated to remembrance, resistance, and understanding the traumas experienced by communities affected by violence and exclusion.” This type of topic – while undoubtedly important and worthy of discussion – was not included in the original description submitted to the university. In light of this, the decision was made to withdraw the patronage.
We encourage reasoned dialogue based on respect and openness, which is the foundation of academic life. We are convinced that even controversial decisions can serve as a stimulus for deeper reflection and conversation.
