Flying high with UWr Faculty of Chemistry
The Lower Silesian Science Festival at the University of Wrocław is an event full of scientific surprises. This year, the Faculty of Chemistry took participants into the world of experiments. Although they looked like magic, they were based on the hard laws of science.
Flying high (as the panel of classes at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Wrocław was called) proved that science can spark the imagination. First, a thermite reaction raised the temperature to +2500 °C, then liquid nitrogen brought it down to −196 °C. The audience saw that ice can be warm, fire can be held in your hand, and metal can sparkle better than fireworks. During two shows at the Faculty of Chemistry, over 600 people ‘took off’ on a scientific adventure and, at the same time, learned that the effects of magic are based on the hard laws of science. The event was hosted by Urszula Komarnicka, Monika Lesiów, Sandra Kozieł, and Maciej Witwicki.
Chemistry Workshops were also held at the Faculty of Chemistry. During this event, approximately 400 people, divided into small groups, had the opportunity to see a series of demonstrations. Employees, doctoral students and students of the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Wrocław introduced participants to their scientific passions. From luminescence used to secure banknotes and documents, to the study of crystal structures, from nanomaterials to colourful organic and inorganic chemistry, there was something interesting for everyone.
